Born on November 22, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bluford made history as the first African American astronaut to travel to space. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1964, followed by a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology in 1974. In 1979, Guion Bluford achieved a historic milestone when he was selected as one of the NASA astronauts for the Space Shuttle Program.
